How I Hand-Cut Gemstones | Lapidary Artist Northern NSW Coast | Ray of Sunshine Jewellery

Picture this...

It's 9 a.m. on a winter morning at my local lapidary club on the Northern NSW Coast, and I'm standing at my grinding wheel in ski boots, thermals, a beanie, and my trusty poncho. The water is freezing. My hands are numb. And I'm about to spend the next few hours coaxing a flash of blue shimmer out of a chunk of grey Madagascar Labradorite that most people would toss aside.

This is lapidary—the art of cutting, shaping, and polishing gemstones by hand. Or, as I like to call it, "gettin my rocks off."

No offense intended—it's just the best way to describe the pure, messy, exhilarating joy I feel when I'm in this creative zone. Headphones on, music blasting, moving to the beat as I bring each stone to life. It's my meditation. My mind release. My escape from the stress of nursing and the chaos of family life.

It's a place where time for me just stops, no shift at work ever goes this fast!

And honestly? It's the part of my jewellery-making process I love the most.

Why I Hand-Cut My Own Gemstones (And Why It Matters to You)

Most jewellery designers buy pre-cut gemstones from suppliers. I don't.

I hand-cut my own gemstones—freehand, without templates or guides—because I want every piece of jewellery I create to be truly one-of-a-kind.

Here's how my process works:

I turn each rough stone over in my hands, searching for its personality. That flash of colour. That hidden shimmer. That one perfect angle that makes me stop and say, "Ohhh"

Sometimes, it take a little time to find that sweet spot and from where I start to where I'm complete is a ever winding journey, and I never know where it's going to take me... But boy, do I enjoy the ride.

And when I find it? I get all excited. It's like a rush of joy. I smile, and I just know it's done.

That's what makes every hand-cut gemstone I create unique. No two are ever the same. No two can be the same. Because I'm not mass-producing. I'm not rushing. I'm patiently searching for each stone's unique personality to shine through, and that becomes the feature of my designs.

When you wear one of my hand-cut creations, you're wearing:

  • A gemstone I held in my hands, I carefully studied, then shaped, and poured my heart and soul into.
  • A special piece of jewellery made with intention, patience, and a whole lotta love
  • A one-of-a-kind piece that no one else in the world has

The Lapidary Process: How I Cut Gemstones by Hand

Lapidary is the art and craft of cutting, shaping, and polishing gemstones. It's dirty, messy work. I get wet. I get covered in the coloured mud of whatever stone I'm cutting—green from Chrysoprase, pink from Rhodochrosite, grey from Labradorite, and Opal is just mud.  My poncho keeps me dry (and warm in winter), but there's no escaping the mess.

And I absolutely love it.

Each gemstone goes through multiple steps before it becomes the heart of my jewellery designs:

1. Sawing (Rough Cutting)

I use a diamond-bladed saw to rough-cut the stone, removing excess material and finding the shape hiding inside.

2. Grinding (Shaping)

I shape each stone freehand on the lapidary grinding wheels, coaxing out the curves, the angles, the personality. No templates. No guides. Just me, the stone, and my hands.

3. Sanding (Smoothing)

I smooth the surface using progressively finer grits on the wheels until the stone feels clean between my fingers.

4. Polishing (Bringing Out the Shimmer)

I use polishing pads and compounds to bring out the final shimmer, flash, and magic. This is when the stone truly comes alive.

Some gemstones are easy to cut:
Amazonite, Larimar, Quartz, Chrysoprase, Rhodochrosite, Chrysocolla—they're a dream to work with. Smooth. Forgiving. Rewarding.

But others are temperamental:
Madagascar Labradorite, Moonstone, Tiger Eye, Opal—these stones require patience, precision, and a deep understanding of their internal structure.

The Temperamental Gemstones (And Why I Love Cutting Them)

Madagascar Labradorite and Moonstone

These stones have colour bars—flashes of blue, green, or rainbow shimmer—that are 180 degrees opposite on the back of the stone. Get the angles right, and you see shimmer on both sides. Cut at the wrong angle, and there's no flash—just a grey mass. You have to be patient. You have to coax the shimmer to the surface, one grit at a time.

Opal

Opal is delicate. You find the colour bar and have to be so careful not to go too deep, or you lose all the colour completely.  It's nerve-wracking and exhilarating at the same time, but most of all, its filthy.

Amazonite

Amazonite has a shimmer bar too, like moonlight dancing across the water. I love finding this personality in each stone and coaxing it to the surface.

Tiger Eye

Tiger Eye has the same shimmer effect, but it's much easier to find and keep. Back in 2016, my first Tiger Eye took me six hours to hand-shape and polish. I was hooked then and there. On the drive home, I pulled the car over twice just to admire what I had created, and couldn't get the smile off my face for days. In those moments, I truly felt a calling.

Matching Gemstones for Earrings: The Challenge You Don't See

If I'm making hand-cut gemstone earrings, matching the stones in size, shape, and shimmer is a challenge in itself. It takes precision. Patience. A lot of trial and error.

I cut one stone. Then I cut another. Then I hold them side by side and adjust. Reshape. Re-polish. Until they're as close to matched as humanly possible.

But here's the thing: they're never exactly the same. Because they're handmade. Because they're real. Because they're yours.

How I Know a Gemstone is Finished

I know a gemstone is finished when I smile. When I just know I'm happy with it.

It's intuitive. It's emotional. It's almost spiritual.

If I'm not feeling a stone's energy or love, I don't cut it.  I save it for another day.  Because forcing it never works.  It falls from my hands, flies off the wheels and just won't do as its told.  The magic only happens when the stone and I are both ready.

You see, for me it's like an energy exchange, and hard to put into words.  They give me as much as I give them.

The Legacy Behind Every Hand-Cut Stone

My grandmother, Rayleen, was a gifted silversmith and lapidary artist. She loved earthy coloured stones like jasper and tiger eye, and she worked with templates and traditional techniques.

I regret not asking more questions when she was alive and most of all not learning from her when I had the chance.  But back then, I wasn't ready.  I was on a different life path.  But I took her foundation and honour it every day. It warms my heart, and I know she would be so proud I am following in her footsteps and cutting my own stones too.

Ray of Sunshine Jewellery is named in her honour, and every stone I cut is a tribute to her legacy. When you wear one of my hand-cut creations, you're not just wearing jewellery—you're carrying light, love, a long missed soul, and a quiet connection to the earth, the sea, and something deeply real.
